SCOTT CHAPMAN

What did you do before acceptance to medical school?
I graduated from USU with a BA three weeks before I started here. While completing my undergraduate study, I also worked for a company that provided services for special needs individuals.
Did you bring any family members to Statia with you? What do they do on the island?
I am married and have one son. My wife and son came to medical school with me. They spend time going on walks, playing at the park, going to the beach and running around the island. There is a strong spouse’s club at the university and they have organized activities available for the spouses to participate in.
Why did you choose USESOM for medica school?
I chose USESOM because it was the fastest way to become a doctor. I would have had to wait 18 months to start medical school in the U.S. I did not even apply to U.S. medical schools; I finished my BA and went directly into medical school at USESOM.
In what area of medicine do you plan to practice?
I plan to train in either Emergency Medicine or Anesthesiology. I will see what direction my clinical rotations point me!
What are your best memories, favorite things, about medical school on Statia?
My favorite memories are watching my son learn to walk on the beach, watching him enjoy playing with bugs, and chasing lizards and chickens! I will miss the relaxed life here on the island and the simple day-to-day life here. I have enjoyed the smaller classes and many strong friendships that I have made here in medical school.
Now that you've completed your Basic Sciences education, will you return to Statia for a visit?
We might. Who knows what the future holds, but it would be fun to bring Ayden back to show him where he spent the first 2 years of his life!
