Phlebotomy Workshop

June 26, 2007

Under the direction of Dr. Lori Trout and second year medical student Marc Ginsburg, the Intravenous and Phlebotomy Workshop was held in the evening last week for medical students attending the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine.

The workshop is part of the new “hands on” teaching approach being piloted at the University of Sint Eustatius.  Students begin with verbal and visual instruction, followed by hands on training in starting IV drips and drawing blood. The students are mentored by fellow students who have completed the training, and finally they become mentors themselves.

As a complement to the MD degree, the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine now offers a Certificate of Phlebotomy to their students who complete the Workshop, perform a requisite number of supervised venipunctures on patients, and pass a phlebotomy certification exam.
