HYPERBARIC MEDICINE PROGRAM

The University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine continues to provide the highest quality of education possible, and our commitment to developing well-rounded physicians continues with our program of Hyperbaric Medicine.

The program, The University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine Diving and Hyperbaric Team Training, with Chamber Operations by Tyler Sexton MD, CHT, DMT, has been reviewed and approved by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology. This course meets the Hyperbaric Course Requirements to sit for the CHT licensing exam. The course is taught by USESOM faculty members Dr. Tyler Sexton and Dr. Gerard Berkel.

A CHT license certificate is valid in ALL 50 U.S. states and can be used to work in any hyperbaric facility. Most every Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) facility requires AT MINIMUM attendance of an approved Hyperbaric Training course as a prerequisite for employment. There are only 24 approved courses in the entire world right now, and USESOM offers one of those authorized courses.

The course will cover Physiology / Physics / Gas Laws, the treatment and Diagnosis of DCS, and all 15 other approved uses of Hyperbaric Medicine. This course provides the required Transcutaneous Oximetry Module as well.

In addition to the CHT course, the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine offers a Diver Medic Training (DMT) program. DMT training provides focused didactic and practical training that addresses recognition, stabilization and treatment of decompression and other diving-related injuries. These topics represent core curriculum, as does the necessary invasive skills that permit optimal medical management. Additional course content includes decompression procedures, chamber operations, and marine life injuries. Region-specific topics such as cold water diving and tropical diving issues, altitude diving, represent optional material.

As with the CHT course, USESOM's Diver Medic Training course is approved by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technologies to fulfill the requirements to sit for the Diver Medic (DMT) license examination.

Upcoming CHT and DMT courses, offerred at USESOM's Sint Eustatius Campus, include:

May 10th - 20th, 2012

Future course dates will be announced in the coming months.

For those students interested in taking their Hyperbaric training to the next level, The University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine offers a unique opportunity to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Hyperbaric Medicine.  Once completing the required Basic Science courses, in addition to the Hyperbaric Modules (CHT and DMT), a student will be eligible to earn a Bachelor’s of Hyperbaric Medicine degree.

USESOM rounds out its Hyperbaric Medicine Program by providing Allied Healthcare Professionals the opportunity to advance their skillset with Category-A Continuing Education Units (CEU) granted through the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technologies.

Additional information for the CHT, DMT, Bachelor's of Hyperbaric Medicine, and CEU credits can be found in the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine's Hyperbaric Medicine Student Handbook.
